FR Personality and health

Did you know that your personality has a connection with your health?

Newer researches show that personality has a greater meaning than earlier resumed, and that it can play an important part for your future health.

It is old news that men with so called Type A personality; hostile, competitive and impatient is more explored for heart problems.

Now researchers found out that wide spectre of personality are linked to medical problems. We are talking about everything from virus infections, Parkinson’s disease which is spasms, muscle stiffness and disablement.

Experiences we have from our childhood and heritability shapes our personality. It is uncertain which personality which plays a part for a disease even though there are several theories.

Below you will find an overview of personalities and sufferings – and what the science claim happens:

The aggressive
Hostile people are exposed to several health problems.
People suffering from hardening of the arteries are often aggressive. Other typical health problems are chronic infections in the body, increased blood pressure and serious depression.

The shy person
Shy men are more vulnerable for virus infections. Researches show that social types have more active protected lymphatic nodes than shy types.

Lymphatic nodes are a part of the body’s immunity system and contribute to getting rid of virus and bacteria.

The impulsive person
Impulsive people have greatest health risk is stomach ulcer. Impulsive people live with higher acid level then normal, which again trigs stomach ulcer.
Impulsivity is also linked to bad eating habits.

The cheerful person
The most surprising research is that cheerful people lives shorter. A theory is that positive and happy people underestimate the many dangerous in life and that they have problems managing things when they face problems.

The worried person
A person who is afraid and is worried about most things has a triple risk of getting high blood pressure. Stress hormones are probably the cause. Men with phobias such as fear of heights are also more exposed to heart diseases, high blood pressure and cholesterol. A cause can be that worried people have a tendency to smoke more, but that doesn’t explain everything. A Belgian study showed that 27 % of worried people died after 10 years of heart treatment compared to 7 % of other people.

The Optimistic person
Men who are optimist lives about 7,5 years longer than depressing men. The risk of dying because of disease is lowered with 50 % among optimistic men.
A theory is that optimism increases the will to survive, and another theory is that a greater sociability matters to reduce the stress hormone hydrocortisone.
Optimists strengthen their immunity system, have less chronic pains and protect themselves against psychological stress just by being themselves.

The conscientious person
This personality is most linked to a long life. It has a clear effect on solid age and a healthy blood pressure and good cholesterol values in the blood.
This is simply because conscientious people avoid risks and live healthy and sensible, but also boring in several occurrences; the opposite of “Live fast, die young”.

The neurotic person
Neurotic people has problem with asthma, migraine, heart disease and stomach ulcer. This is because neurotic people often blames themselves for pains and does not seek professional help. They become more stressed, which again weakens the immunity system and makes them more vulnerable for diseases.

The taciturn and reticent person
Worried types, also known as Type D personalities, suffer from emotional stress and suppress consciously their emotions. This increases the risk for early death.
Experts say that this personality has weakened regulations of stress hormones. The heart beats faster, the blood pressure increases and the arteries tightens. This personality type has in addition more active immunity system which again leads to more infections and damaged blood vessel.

The out-turned person
Out-turned people have less infection, less stress hormones and seek professional help when needed. The catch is that they easily get overweight and the cause can be inheritance or that they are so social that they eat more.

The pessimistic person
People who often expect the worst has often right when it comes to health. Pessimist has 20 % increased risk of dying early compared with optimists. They are often exposed to Parkinson disease. Researchers do not know the reason why a pessimistic attitude harms the person and the environment.
